Realized I have forgotten about this blog so I have decided to post on my last few weeks in LA. So far all I do is apply, apply, apply but I have a gut feeling that some meetings or interviews will be scheduled next week. I had an interview with a big time Production Designer but i wasn’t what he was looking for. Which was fine by me cause I don’t was to do design work. But he said he would keep my resume and keep me in mind if he runs into friends who need help. Which i got a call from a contact of his who was the production designer on the 90’s show The Secret World of Alex Mack. However she never responded to my phone call or e-mail. But i am not giving up!
Also going into the entertainment industry i am going to have to get use to seeing celebrities on a normal basis. This past weekend Jay Leno was in my neighborhood in one of his crazy cars and when i went to run an errand, Jennifer Love Hewitt was walking in the store as i was walking out. I also tried to explore a park today but it was closed off for George Clooney’s staff to park for his gala for President Obama. Almost wound up at his home…
Anyways hopefully i’ll have more exciting news next week and fun stories on set to tell soooon!
So I have just started the biggest adventure of my life and I have decided to do my best at keeping up a blog about it.
Today is the first day of my two-day drive to La-La Land (Los Angeles). I am off to follow my dreams of being a set decorator for film and television.
For those of you who don’t know me and just wondered on to this blog- WELCOME!
Here is a semi-brief history of how I came to this life altering adventure:
I was born and grew up in Dallas, TX. Ever since I was born I have taken after my mom being an artistic person. Didn’t get much of my dad’s business side. I have always been interested in art, design, architecture and anything else that used my creativity. For 10 years of my childhood I wanted to be an architect. It all started in the 1st grade when I got the game SIMS (yes- for all you 90’s kids, I’m talking the original game). I would just use the rosebud;!;!;! cheat code over and over and build the most amazing houses and neighborhoods. In middle school Frank Gehry soon became my favorite architect and idol. One of the top 10 best days of my life is when I saw him give a lecture at SMU when I was in high school. My mom even wrote him a letter, without my knowledge, telling him how I had written one of my high school research papers on him, built a model of one of his buildings and built my own version of one of his cardboard chairs for an art project in high school. He then sent me an autographed book!! It is one of my most prized possessions!
However, when I started going on college visits in 11th grade I realized architecture wasn’t for me. I still have a passion for it and love learning about it but I was more drawn to the interior designer students work. I began my college education studying Interior Design at The University of Arkansas. We had to take a class called About the Profession where I learned that there are so many routes you can take from designing restaurants, hotels, hospitals, cruise ships, theme parks, and so on. Over Christmas break when the majority of Oscar nominated films come out made me begin to think that someone has to design and decorate the sets for this film. Not to mention I have had a huge love for film since I can remember and own over 200 movies. My library is constantly growing. After thinking about it and searching schools that had a major in set design I decided I wanted to transfer. That following spring break I went to LA and Savannah, GA to look at two schools. In LA I took a tour of WB studios. Just being on the lot and seeing the old sets from Gilmore Girls, ER, Friends, and walking on the set of Big Bang Theory I knew I was making the right decision and that working in the industry was what I wanted to do. I transferred the following year to Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, GA and majored in Production Design. After working on theater productions, student films, and class projects I realized I wanted a career in set decoration. I had finally found the dream job that was perfect for me as it is all of my passions rolled into one.
Sorry that was long but I wanted to give a background of how I got here before you see where I go from here.
Anyways now that I have graduated with my Bachelor of Arts degree, I am off to begin any odd job to get my foot in the door and continue networking so I can work my way to my dream job.
Los Angeles is known for the city of dreams right?…Well I’ll let you know if mine come true.
